NO. 130. rrv Who's To Run Hospital Now Question At Issue Saliba Dissatisfied With Way Things Have' Worked Out in Management as a Community Enterprise and Offers As sume Outstanding Obligations for Cancellation Lease Who is to run the Elizabeth City "hospital? That is the crux of the controversy of which members of the board of directors of the Community Hospital find themselves the center. Dr. Saliiba has made the board of directors a proposition in writing Vith a view to cancelling the lease under which the hospital is now op erating. In the form in which it wa3 pre sented the directors did not feel that they could accept the proposition without referring the question to the stockholders and a stockholders meeting was accordingly called for next Monday to consider the pro posal. Then somebody suggested that the stockholders, before casting their votes, might wish to get a line on .popular sentiment generally. Thflt. is thp whv nf thf, maao Yntiot- lng at the courthouse Friday night. It is not a meeting of stockholders but a genuine mass meeting to which everybody interested is invited and where the man who has never had any faith in running the hospital as a community Institution and who has never subscribed to a cent's worth of stock in it will have as much right to the floor as the biggest stockholder in it. Dr. Saliba wants his hospital back. No question about that. He leased it for a period of years to the Pas quotank Municipal Hospital Associa tion, but now he would like to term inate the lease. Here is his proposi tion made to the directors of the hos pital on last Saturday night: Elizabeth Citv, N. C. June 9, 1923. The Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, ' Elizabeth City, N. C. Gentlemen:- I make the following proposl- flnn- ; (1) If you will consent to cancel the lease or contract which you Tiave running from me to you on the hospital property, on the date of September 1921, I will agree -tn rAtenciA vnn frnm fill raannnalhll- ity carried by you under the terms of the contract mentioned, the said release of you by me being as of .date July 1..1923. (2) 1 will agree In consideration of the above proposition to be per formed by you to assume and promptly pay all the outstanding "liabilities against the hospital -created and existing through and "by the present management there of; provided said outstanding lia bilities shall not exceed the sum 'of $1,200.00. (3) In consideration of all the -foregoing and above to be per formed and happened by you I hereby agree and bind myself to cause the hospital referred to In this proposition to be kept open nd a going concern in accordance with modern usage employed in the maintenance of an up-to-date , hospital. Yours very truly, JOHN SALIBA, M.D., CM. Meantime news of Dr. Saliba a of - fer has got about on the street, and one can hear all gorts of arguments pro and con. The attitude of those who favor accepting the offer is that here Is an opportunity for the community to rid Itself of the burden of continually be lug asked In one way or another to contribute to its support. The fact that Dr. Saliba Is a per sona non grata to a large proportion of the practicing physicians In the city Is no secret. It can not be blinked that this fact, if Dr. Saliba runs the hospital, would militate against Its usefulness as an institution for the service of all the oeonle. and that many patients would be sent to other hospitals who, under the present sys- tern of management, would be treat ed here. Preceded by.Zeigler's band and led by mounted braves in war paint and feathers along streets lighted by the red glare of torches, the Red Men's parade wended its way along its ap pointed route to "the public square Thursday night, where a trembling pale face was tortured and burned at the stake, while thousands lined the streets to watch the parade or packed in solid mass on the public square to see the victim writhe under the tor ture and to watch the blue flames envelope his form. Not only so, but every window and housetop commanding a view of the public square was filled with inter ested spectators of the unusual sight. That was Thursday night, and the Red Men had full possession of the city. Rut Friday morning the braves and their steeds had vanished, their war cry was heard no more and Eliz abeth City settled down to its wonted calm. So the silver jubilee celebration of the North Carolina Great Council of Red Men and of the North Carolina Great Council of the Degree of Poca hontas, held in the city of its first or ganization, has passed into history.
